Complete in 2009, Conservatory set out to completely change what people expect of an apartment and office building. Conservatory was awarded the best High Density Residential Development, and the prestigious 'President's Award at the 2009 SA UDIA awards together with achieving finalist status in the national BPN Sustainability Awards. Conservatory set out to be one of the most environmentally advanced buildings in Australia and Adelaide's first 'green' high rise residential and office complex.

The building, amongst other things, produces some of its own power, harvests its own rainwater (estimated at the equivalent of 1.5 Olympic size swimming pools each year) and provides its residents with homes in the sky that are eminently liveable and pre-eminently stylish.

The AUD$70 million development is located on the prime corner of Hindmarsh Square and Grenfell Street, in the heart of the city of Adelaide.

The development was declared a Major Project by the State Government in 2003 due to its environmental significance and importance to the State.

This 19 level tower includes 53 luxury apartments, together with state of the art office and retail accommodation. The apartments start at level 10, above the office space, and feature magnificent views to Hindmarsh Square, the Adelaide Hills and over the city.

ESD Initiatives of Conservatory include:

  • solar cells which produce power within the building, resulting in reduced power costs and reduce green house gas emissions;
  • rain water capture which enables the water to be reused in the building, thus reducing mains usage;
  • careful selection of building materials and finishes including low VOC paint and carpet, low emission composite wood and use of sustainable materials;
  • operational design which will significantly reduce energy, water and the consumption of natural resources when compared to traditional buildings;
  • combined heat and power (CHP) micro turbine technology which produces energy for use in the building and heats the pool water and produces apartment hot water;
  • extensive use of double glazing and performance glazing which reduces heating and cooling requirements and resultant power usage, and improved acoustic performance;
  • built in 3 stream waste recycling system for easy waste sorting and collection;
  • high efficiency lighting and lift systems;
  • high efficiency air-conditioning systems including inverter type ducted systems to apartments with ozone friendly refrigerants.
