In 1956 the late Gus Hines OBE JP established Hines Metals Pty Ltd. Hines Metals initiatives included breaking up of steam locomotives and international cargo vessels as they became redundant. As the group began to grow, industrial real estate acquisitions were made in Wingfield, South Australia, and subsequent further development of these sites was successfully undertaken as a side to the main trading business.

In 1973 Hines Metals Pty Ltd was sold to a publicly listed Australian company and it was at this time that the group changed its direction to become international food merchant traders, and exporters of waste paper for recycling. In 1979 and 1991 the Australian Government recognised the group's success in the export arenas with national awards.

Executive Chairman of the Hines Group, Jack Hines was awarded the Order of Australia Medal by the Australian Government in 1995 for his service to the Australian export industry and business community.

As the export activities expanded, the family acquired further real estate including industrial, retail, pastoral and commercial properties.

In 1999 the group undertook its first major development, demolishing three buildings it owned in Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide and constructing The Residence, a 188 apartment and hotel complex.

Today the proud Hines family tradition continues with the second and third generations continuing to expand the group's activities.
